Whether you’re chasing those fiery reds and oranges or craving some classic fall treats, this 7-day itinerary has everything you need for the perfect New England getaway. From historic cities to charming mountain towns, every day is packed with adventures that’ll make you wish fall lasted forever.

So grab your comfiest sweaters, your camera, and your appetite for all things cozy—here’s your perfect week in New England.

Day 1: Welcome to Boston, Massachusetts

Morning: Kick off your New England adventure in the heart of Boston. Start your day with a stroll through the Boston Public Garden. The crisp fall air and the vibrant foliage reflecting off the park’s lagoon make it the perfect spot to snap some photos. If you’re a history buff, follow the Freedom Trail to explore some of Boston’s most iconic sites, from the Massachusetts State House to Paul Revere’s House.

Lunch: After your morning of exploration, head to Neptune Oyster in the North End for one of Boston’s best lobster rolls. Pair it with their clam chowder for a classic New England experience.

Afternoon: Spend your afternoon wandering around the Beacon Hill neighborhood. With its cobblestone streets and beautiful brownstones, Beacon Hill is even more picturesque in the fall. Stop by Tatte Bakery & Café for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up; their coffee and pastries are the stuff of dreams.

Evening: End your day with a dinner at Legal Sea Foods by the waterfront. Order the seafood platter to get a taste of everything, from oysters to scallops. Take a walk along the Boston Harborwalk after dinner, where you can enjoy the evening views of the city skyline.

Day 2: Discover the Charm of Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Morning: After breakfast, make your way to the coastal town of Portsmouth, New Hampshire (about an hour’s drive from Boston). Start your day at Prescott Park, where you can take in the fall colors along the Piscataqua River. The gardens here are beautiful year-round, but there’s something special about them in autumn.

Lunch: Head to The Friendly Toast for a quirky and delicious brunch. Their eclectic menu has something for everyone, but the stuffed French toast with a side of their signature home fries is a must-try.

Afternoon: Take a walk through Strawbery Banke Museum, an outdoor history museum that brings four centuries of American history to life. The restored houses and reenactments offer a fascinating glimpse into the past, and the autumn backdrop only adds to the charm.

Evening: For dinner, make a reservation at Jumpin’ Jay’s Fish Café. This Portsmouth staple offers some of the best seafood in town, with dishes like grilled swordfish and seafood pasta that are perfect for a cozy fall evening.

Day 3: Explore the Magic of Portland, Maine

Morning: Set off early for Portland, Maine (about an hour’s drive from Portsmouth). Start your day with a visit to the Eastern Promenade, where you can enjoy sweeping views of Casco Bay. The fall colors here are particularly stunning against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean.

Lunch: Make your way to Eventide Oyster Co. for lunch. Their brown butter lobster roll is famous for a reason, and it’s the perfect way to refuel after your morning of exploring.

Afternoon: Spend your afternoon wandering the cobblestone streets of the Old Port district. The area is full of boutique shops, art galleries, and cozy cafes. If you’re a fan of craft beer, stop by Allagash Brewing Company for a tasting—try their seasonal brews to get into the autumn spirit.

Evening: For dinner, check out Fore Street—a Portland institution known for its wood-fired dishes and farm-to-table fare. Afterward, take a leisurely stroll along the Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park, where you can catch a beautiful sunset with the lighthouse in the foreground.

Day 4: Head to the Heart of Vermont – Stowe

Morning: Drive about three hours inland to the picture-perfect town of Stowe, Vermont. Your first stop should be Mount Mansfield, Vermont’s highest peak. Take the Stowe Mountain Resort gondola to the summit for panoramic views of the surrounding mountains drenched in autumn colors. If you’re feeling adventurous, hike one of the trails at the top.

Lunch: Enjoy lunch at the Trapp Family Lodge, where you can savor Austrian-inspired cuisine with stunning views of the valley. The Wiener Schnitzel paired with their house-brewed lager is the perfect fall meal.

Afternoon: Spend your afternoon exploring Stowe’s quaint downtown area. Pop into Shaw’s General Store for some local souvenirs and grab a coffee at Black Cap Coffee & Beer to keep you warm as you stroll through town.

Evening: End your day with dinner at Harrison’s Restaurant in Stowe. The cozy atmosphere and locally sourced dishes make it the ideal spot to wind down. Don’t forget to try their maple-glazed salmon—it’s Vermont on a plate.

Day 5: Experience the Quintessential New England Town of Woodstock, Vermont

Morning: Drive about an hour south to Woodstock, Vermont. Start your day at Billings Farm & Museum, where you can learn about Vermont’s rural heritage and see the farm’s fall harvest. The scenic beauty here, with rolling hills and vibrant foliage, is quintessential New England.

Lunch: Head to The Woodstock Inn & Resort for lunch. Their Red Rooster restaurant serves up farm-to-table fare in a refined setting—try their Vermont cheddar and apple grilled cheese for a perfect taste of fall.

Afternoon: After lunch, explore the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. The park’s trails offer some of the best leaf-peeping opportunities, with paths winding through forests of maples, oaks, and birches. Don’t miss the Pogue—a serene pond that reflects the surrounding foliage like a mirror.

Evening: For dinner, visit The Prince & The Pauper, a cozy restaurant in the heart of Woodstock. Their menu changes daily, but you can expect dishes that showcase local, seasonal ingredients. After dinner, take a leisurely walk through the village, where the white-steepled church and colonial homes are particularly charming in the evening light.

Day 6: Journey to the White Mountains, New Hampshire

Morning: Travel about two hours east to North Conway, New Hampshire. Begin your day with a drive along the Kancamagus Highway—a 34.5-mile scenic byway that’s one of the most famous leaf-peeping routes in the country. Stop at Sabbaday Falls for a short hike to a beautiful waterfall surrounded by vibrant foliage.

Lunch: Enjoy lunch in North Conway at Flatbread Company, where you can indulge in wood-fired pizzas made with local, organic ingredients. Their seasonal specials often feature fall flavors like roasted squash and caramelized onions.

Afternoon: After lunch, visit Cranmore Mountain Resort. Take the chairlift to the top for breathtaking views of the White Mountains, or if you’re up for it, explore the hiking trails that meander through the fall-colored forest. For a bit of history, swing by the Conway Scenic Railroad and take a ride on one of their fall foliage trains.

Evening: For dinner, try White Mountain Cider Co. in nearby Glen. This cozy spot offers a farm-to-table menu with dishes like cider-brined pork chops and apple crisp for dessert. It’s the perfect place to wrap up a day of autumn adventures.

Day 7: End Your Journey in Burlington, Vermont

Morning: For your final day, head to Burlington, Vermont (about a two-hour drive from North Conway). Start your day with a walk along the Burlington Waterfront Park, where you can enjoy stunning views of Lake Champlain with the Adirondack Mountains in the distance, all framed by fall colors.

Lunch: Grab lunch at Hen of the Wood, a farm-to-table restaurant that showcases the best of Vermont’s local produce. Their mushroom toast is a must-try and pairs perfectly with a glass of Vermont cider.

Afternoon: Spend your afternoon exploring the Church Street Marketplace, a pedestrian-only street lined with shops, cafes, and street performers. Pop into Lake Champlain Chocolates for some sweet souvenirs, and if you’re still hungry, grab a maple creemee (a Vermont specialty) from a local stand.

Evening: End your New England fall adventure with dinner at Farmhouse Tap & Grill. This Burlington favorite offers a seasonal menu featuring local meats, cheeses, and produce. Try their Vermont-raised beef burger or the roasted root vegetable plate for a final taste of fall.
